In 1989, Matthew Haines completed his Australian Apprenticeship in building. Eight years later, in 1997, he started his own business, Hainesbuild.
In 2000, Matthew partnered with Newcastle Master Builders Apprentices (NBMA) to recruit apprentices and has been working with them ever since to grow his business and the future of those he trains.
“I have been fortunate enough to have two Apprentices win NMBA Apprentice of the Year. Having these young, keen Apprentices start their career with my business is an amazing opportunity not only to be a part of shaping their future but to also expose them to the benefits that NMBA has to offer,” he said.
“Seeing past Apprentices go on to create their own pathways in the industry is an extremely rewarding feeling.”
NBMA has been providing Hainesbuild with their Group Training Organisation (GTO) services. As part of that service, they employ apprentices and trainees and then place them with you for as long as you need them. They also take care of the paperwork for wages, allowances, workers compensation, superannuation etc, while you allow time off to attend any off-the-job training that may be required.
“There are so many benefits to engaging Apprentices through NMBA. A single hourly rate that can be priced into all quoting, knowing that there are no additional costs for TAFE days, Wet days, Annual Leave, Superannuation, Workers Compensation etc, with no additional paperwork it is also a major bonus.”
The security and flexibility that NMBA provides Hainesbuild and his apprentices also means that Matthew is able to bring on apprentices whilst knowing that if business slows down, their apprentices will be placed with another employer and be able to complete their apprenticeship. He also knows that they will support their apprentices in ways that small businesses may not always be able to such as HR, legal and environmental support.
“The ability to return Apprentices if work is slow and knowing that they will be placed with another Host Employer to ensure they complete their training is a great piece of mind when faced with such a difficult situation.” He said. “NMBA continue to follow the progress and wellbeing of the Apprentice throughout their training with regular site visits.”
For Matthew, partnering with NMBA has not only supported the growth of his business, but also the growth of the building industry.
“I have been a longtime supporter of not only the NMBA but also the employment and promotion of young people into the industry.”
