Jasmine Cliff is in her third year of an Electrical Apprenticeship; however, it has taken her a little longer than three years to get here due to a small break in her apprenticeship to try her hand at banking.
Whilst banking wasn’t the right pathway for her, her journey there got her to leave her self-doubt behind and get back on track to complete her electrical apprenticeship with a little help from Group Training Organisation 1300apprentice.
Working with large and small employers 1300apprentice connects apprentices and trainees to the right employer. A for-purpose organisation with over 30 years of experience in the Vocational Education & Training industry across 40 vocations it’s our industry connections that make us reputable.
“I started doubting myself and thinking, ‘Am I learning too slow? Am I even good at this?’ even though I had tradesmen tell me I was doing really well, but I got to a point where I just didn’t believe it,” Jasmine Said.
Jasmin’s role with the bank was secured through 1300apprentice. When her contract there was coming to an end, she asked them to help her get back into her electrical apprenticeship and just two weeks later she secured a position with her host employer Coral Air.
“I find that going through 1300apprentice, they’re a mediator,” she said. “Having my mentor through them ensures no boundaries are stepped on, everything is running smoothly, if there’s an issue they will sort it out and it won’t even seem like it’s an issue, to begin with.”
Which is something that as a female apprentice in a male-dominated industry, Jasmine has come to appreciate more than she expected.
“Working through the GTO, I don’t really have that thought or worry of being a female apprentice, because I know when I worked directly for the employer it was kind of like ‘suck it up’. Whereas now, it’s kind of like, ‘Okay we know you’re a woman, we know there will be these issues, just let us know and we will get around it.’”
And now, Jasmine encourages all women who are interested in undertaking a trade to contact your local Group Training Organisation and get started as soon as possible.
“Don’t wait… I waited and I was tossing it up, I wasted so much time. I could probably be a fourth-year by now. As soon as they think that’s what they want to do, go and do it.”
“So, what if it’s not for them because, for the majority, it is for them.”
